Topic: Joe Craig, I what to personally thank you for using the home page of your
website to inform us (Black People)about the way we are preceived by a very large segment of the American Citizenry. We are
looked upon as inferior beings. Nevertheless, we are as capable as anyone of bringing our thoughts into a physical reality.
The pessismist may think or say,"if this was so,why have we failed to do so." First of all, if we don't believe that we can
accomplish something we are not going to pursue it.Honestly, most of us have been called ignorant or dumb so much that we've
come to accept those mistakes as truth. Before we can move forward collectively, individually, we've got to take affirmative
steps to change our lives and the way that we perceive oursleves. At one point in my life, I believed that I was dumb and
incapable of learning.Fortunately for me, I was put in a position that forced the greatness out of me. Through pain suffering
and yes tears, I studied, studied and studied some more until I taught myself criminal law,I've written a small book, graduated
form Blackstone Scholl of law and have founded and facilitate several programs. I've had several opportunities to put my training
into action, and to date, I've won every action that I've brought administratively and criminally. Guess what, I'm still studying
You see, people are not born smart they work hard at it.Just as you and I must do. When we begin to study we are on our way
to true freedom. Again, Joe Craig I thank you for making this medium of communication possible. Hold your head up high Altgeld!!!!
It starts with you, as it did with me, one book at a time.

Topic: I just got my ComEd bill. It went up more than 22%. I do not blame ComEd
for this increase, they are in the business of making as much money as they can. Nevertheless, I'm old enough to remember the
promise made by ComEd: Nuclear Power will lower electric bills. It cost Exelon less to produce eletric power, but charge ComEd
more for eletric power. The so-called recent "Illinois Electricity Auction" was nothing more tan a act to get more money.
Even so, I do blame Emil Jones, State Senator, for eletric bill increases. The IL. House passed a bill to keep the eletric
rate where it was, for two years. However, Emil Jones did not allow the bill to come before the Senate. I live in the 17th
Senatorial District; my State Senator,Donne Trotter, will answer for this. If Emil Jones is your State Senator, he should
be held accountable. The question is: how much money did each Senator rec'd from ComEd (Exelon) for their inaction.

Jan. 24th, 2007 on 82nd.St and Ashland at 10:30am. Please keep us in your prayers, Amen! ~ It is so wonderful to see that
the passion for Altgeld is still strong among us, as we search for reasons and ways that has caused such a change from when
we were growing up in a safe and loving Community. I know it has been said that we need to do more than pray, and I agree,
action does speak louder than words. But as for me and at this time all I can do is fall to my knees and cry out to God the
Father to please have mercy on Altgeld Gardens and every resident, every leader, every decision maker and all parties invloved.
I speak restoration, deliverance from destruction, both to themselves and others, I speak life back into AG. I speak peace
that flows like a river, I speak heart makeovers, change the heart conditions of your people Lord!I speak protection from
all hurt harm and danger!I speak the Blood of Jesus over area square inch, cover them with your Blood Lord! Change the minds
of your people Lord to want to make better choices, In Jesus name, I speak those things that are not as if they were! Hallelujah!
And so it is! Amen! I'm staying on the wall until something happens! love you all, Rev. Queen Vet, ~ Gilbert, Arizona

teens to do but it all still starts at home sweetie...in order for the kids of today to have the mind to do constructive things
is for parents to create such in the household...along w/whoop'n that butt if necessary. The abscence of the male figure is
a huge problem, parents or parent not taking their children to the church house, teaching them the "fear of God", spending
quality time by taking them places that is not costly...we could go on and on but it still starts at home. I think it would
be difficult for quality extra-curricular activities to exist in communities w/many of those (younger than my children generation)
who do not respect such priviledges.

G we had basketball courts in every block and in some blocks there was two courts. Myself and many others would go from block
to block playing without any incidents. We had the children building that we were able to go and not only play basketball
there was workshops such as wood shop and tumbling for the boys and there was arts and crafts and dancing for the girls. The
swimming pool open I believe six days a week. Then we also had the catholic gym to play in. Which is where I would play when
the weather didn't permit me to play outside. Every day we had things to do to occupied our time and we had parents that also
had time to give us.

inner-city neighborhoods) is that there is NOTHING for them to do. "An idle mind is the devil's wkshp" has never been truer
when it comes to this subject. A lot of it also is a generational thing. I am fortunate enough to have parents, aunts, uncles,
etc., who are OLD enough to have taught me about the struggles; these kids today don't know squat about struggling. They THINK
they do, and that's the problem. Lack of black male teachers is another problem I see. Gosh, I could type a NOVEL about all
the ills that I believe are a part of the problem. I just got off the phone with a relative who is in her early 20s. She told
me she was just leaving a funeral. I half-heartedly joked, "Girl, you just LOVE funerals, don't you?" Her reply-->"You
ain't got no choice but to love 'em; living out here, you're gonna go to SO many..."

Topic: AMEN Gloria Kendricks...AMEN sistah...there's nothing like old school
upbringing and teaching these children of today to respect themselves as well as others. However, that's the problem; no good
home taught lessons. Gang violence existed in the 60s & 70s in the "G"...gang violence was all over the city of Chg as
my big bro Ray J has said, folks was being murdered by guns & knives...I recall too many of them, however, a butt kicking
was the primary result of any altercation...now these kids today can't seem to take a butt kicking and hardly from parents
who may go to jail for whooping their children...well, put me to jail I say, I'd rather kick my kid's *#% than for them to
go to jail as a result of a terrible crime. As for the AG community, something productive definitely needs to be done and
quick...I can see that a tearing down of the bldgs in the near future will occur if nothing is done about the crime in our
"hood". I look forward to receiving solutions and putting them out there as well as hearing of other's ideas of what could
be done to stop the murders/crimes.

http://www.chicagoreporter.com/ This is THE premiere publication for all kinds of articles on issues dealing with the impoverished and race relations. Altgeld
is a regular subject matter for them, too. When you get to the site, type "Altgeld Gardens" in the search bar, and links to
all kinds of articles come up. I am a sociology and media junkie, so this is a site I visit quite often! :-)

we do to stop this nonsense of our black brothers killing each other;now when I was growing up in altgeld,it was about surviving
a butt kicking when you go into different parts of the city, the west side,east63street(like stony island)you had these street
gangs,egyptian cobras(west side)blackstone rangers(63rd&stony island)now they wasn't shooting then,but gave you a good
butt kicking,I was fortunate enough not to get jumped on by neither gangs when I was in their territory, when you got your
butt kicked,that was it,everybody went their way,it was over,nowdays they can't take a beat down,they go & get their gun's
&want to kill somebody, because they got beat up by that person.when are they really going to wake up &stop the killing

what do they expect an oldsider to do this their community, they have to really want to clean it up,action speaks louder that
words,so they (the older adults)will have to get off their b--- &clean up their community,if the violence keep up,they
will tear down altgeld;than the people that's left in altgeld will have to find someplace else to live, where they will be
paying big bucks for the number of bedrooms that someof them will need for their familes.if they don't care, other people won't
either,so the people of altgeld if you want the g.to be torn down then keep turning your heads to all the violence that's
going on the community, because the powers to be will tear it down & I won't like it just like any other alumni of altgeld
won't like it you see the powers to be don't have to live out there, they can go to their big luxury homes in the suburbs
or whereever,no more oldtimers picnic this is from an altgeld & carver alumni.

Topic: If I remember correctly (and I do!) The Gardens saw MORE gang violence back
in the 80's and 90's than it does now. My condolences to the lives that were lost, theres no excuse for senseless violence
but with ALL the other housing projects torn down now...thats just shows us that Altgeld is next. I personally witnessed a
few incidents back in the early-mid 80's that shouldve made headlines but never got mentioned because the media was concentrating
on Cabrini Green at that time, now Cabrini is gone so...I'm sure they are saying; "Let's get Altgeld demolished now." the
renovation 'smokescreen' is only to buy a little time but beleive me, the Gardens will be next for the wrecking ball. I'm
38 years old and alot of the generation older than mine ABANDONED us during our prime developement years (which caused alot
of the madness thats happening now) and they are the ones who complain the most now. This is bigger than prayer vigils and
all that at this point (thats been tried and failed already) lets TAKE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD BACK if we realy want it! In regards
to prayer AND complaints...Action speaks louder than words!

Topic: Another HUGE problem that is NEVER/RARELY mentioned is that our men have not taken back the community. Women have
been holding things down for FAR TOO LONG. I do know someone from AG who tries to, EVERY chance he gets, to talk some sense
into the young brothas out there. He knows that it is a Herculean task, but he won't stop. And I encourage him to no end,
especially since he's the ONLY one I am acquainted with who is at least TRYING. I am not knocking what anyone wants to do
to help, because SOMETHING is better than NOTHING, but I just don't see how productive holding vigils and marches is gonna
do the trick. We all know what has to/needs to be done here... Well, at least, finally, some dialogue about it all is happening
on this message board. It's a START, huh...

their kids to respect others in their community. Communities don't change the people that live in them do. If parents start
raising their children like we were raised back in the day and stop partying with them and trying to be their friends and
moniter who they hang out with things might be different(not all parents are doing a bad job) I raised my girls out in Altgeld
and they are productive youn ladys and have moved in other cities and are doing well. I'm from old school I raised them like
my mom raised me and didn't hold back any punches. Whatever area you live in it starts at home.

Topic: There are still some good people in the Altgeld-Murry Homes. Praise the
Lord Everybody. I haven't signed on in a while but I feel like it's time for someone to say something about the good still
living in Altgeld and remind them that good people came out of Altgeld. Now I read the newspaper article and it seems as if
some of the residents have lost faith, hope and trust in each other. We can still help a brother or sister out as our parents
did when we grew up there. Sure times have changed but it's still okay to show love. Gangbangers are everywhere not just in
Altgeld. The media will always focus on the bad because that is their job. They need to sell newspapers. We can give them positive
things to write about. There are still some people there who will go out of their way to do a good deed or two. I feel so
sad sometime when I read about the negative things about my community and I still say my community because I am always thinking
of ways I can give back to it. Judge Stuttley has a great mentoring program. It can be something as simple as buying someone
some food from the farm to keep them from ripping off a neighbor. I also wonder why there were never any prayer vigils held
like it is in some of the other communities when there are shootings. Are they sending counselors to the schools? What can
we do as old-timers to try to help our community. We all enjoy the picnic and go home but there is still life after the picnic.
Positive things do happen in Altgeld. If you know of any, please share them. I am glad to read they are naming a street after
Geneal Lewis in his hometown. We need to pray for Altgeld and God still does answer prayer. The churches can come together
and pray. It doesn't matter your denomination. Prayer changes people, situations and things! Does anyone have any suggestions?
Share them. I refuse to give up hope for my community. Will anybody stand with me in prayer? Love to All. Elder Andrea Evans

My formative years spent there shaped me in so many positive ways. I lived in the gardens from "59" til "69". When we left
I couldn't understand why we were moving from this great community!! Only to realize that the sense of community and family
had been great preparation for the world I was about to face. In fact, it wasn't until after i moved that I realized that
the Gardens were a part of the CHA!! I've always heard about the annual reunion but had never made it. It's kinda ironic given
that I've contracted with the CHA in various capacities over the last few years. God bless you all!!! Have a safe, prosperous,

Topic: Dear Altgeld Family: May you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
My father is still ill, so this has been another trying year, but with the grace of God, he is undergoing radiation treatments
but stable at this time. I have read about many deaths and illnesses on this site this year. No matter what your trials and
tribulations this year, I hope that you were able to overcome and thank the Lord for making it this far. It is truly wonderful
to see so many Altgeld Family finally taking advantage of this website to leave messages, voice your opinions and to find
long lost friends. This was Joe's intention when Joe and I first discussed. Keep on hitting it. Altgeld is truly blessed to
have his talent. It is so good to see an "Oldtimer" (Jrope) keep up with the "younguns". Joe knows all of the history of AG,
wish you all had the opportunity to sit and talk with him sometimes. He was mentioned in one of the first books written about
Altgeld by the late John Dunham. You can get it from the library. He is right about how the AG OldTimers Picnic started but
left off the "Housing Men" played a ballgame against the "Competitors Social Club" beginning in 1975 and thus began the annual
baseball game with food. As the years went on it turned into a picnic in Carver Park where it will always remain. People should
remember there is only 1 PICNIC. It doesn't matter why some chose to leave, what matters is who stays, 3rd Sunday in August,
forever. Butchie you are an entrepreneur, so if people want you to build a website make your money, but patent it. Send a
prayer out for Charlene Piggee(2) & Elizabeth Finley (4). Both of their mothers are ill at this time. Thanks Raymond and
everyone else who always mention my name is good spirits. Peace and love to you all.

Topic: Hi, Butchie. I've been trying to reach out to
ya; I have a GREAT idea to propose for this site and I'd love to hear your thoughts. PLEASE CONTACT ME--thanks! Anyway, about
other public housing developments wanting you to create a site for them--hmmm... I'd be remiss if I didn't say that the specialness
of it all was that A.G. was the only one that had its own site, thus--making us stand out from others. But I guess I won't
be selfish :-)--if others have stories to share and can connect like we do via a website, then I guess it's cool. I would
just offer one suggestion though: Make improvements/enhancements to THIS site and THEN tackle the new territory. Just "My
Two Cents..." Thanks!

talking with my nephrew one day about them starting up a website about stateway but nothing came of it,but now you speaking
