"To view new comments you will need to scroll down, as Raymond Johnson, will always be the first person that you see under this section.  Raymond, was "Da Mayor" of AltgeldGardens.com"

A time of sadness has come upon our community.  Regretfully I announce the homegoing of Raymond Johnson, aka Ray J, who made his transition on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007.

Yeah, A.G, our very own beloved has left us for a time...a constant staple on this website...if you scroll through the message board, current and all archives, you will see some of his remarks. I can feel my big brother's spirit...he knew he was leaving me and didn't want me to worry, he also knew I would be the one to write this info on him. My heart is heavy at this time. Miss you & Love you big bro Ray! Thanks for letting me coordinate your b-day party early this year in Jan. I will never forget it. I will post more info as necessary.

Meanwhile, Ray is the former resident of blks #3 & #6, his siblings are Glen, Harold of MN, sisters are Hazel Walker formerly of blk #8 and Joan Walker.
Please keep the family in your prayers!  At this time, services are pending; info will be posted soon.

Dear AG Family;
It is with much sadness and heavy heart that I inform you of the death of my father, Loice Woods.  Most of you know that he was ill with Cancer for the past 4 years.  In October, the doctors informed us that there was nothing more they could do.  We placed him in Home Hospice care, where our entire family cared for him around the clock for 24 hours a day.  He made his transition on Wednesday, December 5th.  He fought a long and hard battle, but he is no longer suffering and at peace.

I want to thank each and every one of you who have supported me and my family through these years.  The calls, cards, visits and support have been overwhelming and my family sincerely thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.  Please know that if you call, it may take some time to get back to you, but we will. The arrangements are below, pass the word.
Condolences may be addressed to Loisteen Woods Walker at 7045 S. California, Chicago, 60629
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you send red or white poinsettas.

Once More

We cannot plan

We cannot rehearse

The inevitable end.

Of all the choices

We make in life

The divine Father will always

Lead us to transcend…

…to ethereal existence.

But…just once more

I’d like to hear your voice

Reach me from across the room.

Just once more

I’d like to get in trouble

For playing in your perfume.

Just once more

I’d like to pat my feet

As I watch you dance to your favorite tune.

Just once more.

As parents, we raise our children

To find their own way.

We fret and worry,

And fuss from day to day.

We grow weary and tired,

Hair turns gray,

Just to respect our childrens’ space,

Regardless of distance,

Blind to their resistance.

But…just once more

I’d like to zip my lips

When you decide to trip.

Just once more

I’d like to laugh when

They music plays and your hips slip.

One more time,

I need to see your eyes

The smile within

When you see through my childhood lies.

 Designs of motherhood sublime

Runs deep within,

Rhythm of dance, skill of rhyme.

My hat is off to you

Single mother, “Strong Silent Beauty”

Seamlessly loving, giving, smoothly,

Never feeling bound by duty.

Just once more,

Yet never questioning the Father above

I’d like to fly beneath your wing

Like a baby dove,

Safely tucked under your feathers of love.

As children, you taught us to naturally give love.

As children, you taught us to naturally give love.

As children, you taught us to naturally give love…

…but mom, just once more…

Caring Sister, Faithful Friend

Linda Jones
October 23, 1943 ? November 8, 2006

With great sadness, I wish to inform you of the passing of my beloved  sister, Linda Jones (blocks 9 and 13), class of 1962 of heart failure.

Linda Ann Jones

Born October 23 in Chicago, Illinois to Barbara and Carlyle Douglas  (both deceased). She lived in Altgeldt Gardens, a small housing  project on the south side of Chicago. She began her education at  George Washington Carver Elementary  School there in the projects.  Her family moved to  Detroit,  Michigan in 1957 where she continued  her education at Northern High School, until she dropped out at the  age of sixteen.  Married to Cleveland Jones, she bore four children:  Elizabeth, Christopher, Kevin and David.  She and her husband  separated shortly after they were married.

A single parent, she struggled with poverty for most of her life.  Although, it was impossible to give her children everything she  wanted to give them,  she loved them dearly and did her best to  provide for them.  She loved getting together with her extended  family at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Linda had a deep and abiding faith in God and was active in her  church.  She did her best to share the Word of God with her friends  and family.

She loved music, dancing, reading and writing.  She also had a lively  imagination and enjoyed telling stories.  She loved the company of  friends and family.  She had the gift of making friends. Wherever she  went she made friends. She talked on the phone for hours.

Her heart was generous and giving.  Although she had very little in  the way of material things, she constantly shared and gave away the  few things she had.

Linda, will be remembered by her four children, Elizabeth Douglas,  Christopher Douglas, Kevin Jones and David Jones; her sister Brigid

Warm regards,

Dale Lamarr McMoore Savage was born July 27, 1951, in Chicago, IL to Juliet Martha Dean and Roy McMoore Sr. She was the fourth child of six, having two sisters and three brothers. She was the mother of four daughters and a grandmother of grandson, Julian and granddaughter, Aria, who preceded her in death.
She attended Our Lady of The Gardens Elementary School, Carver High School and Olive Harvey Community College. On December 27, 1975, she entered a thirty-year blissful marriage with MacArthur Savage, after a two year friendship they became inseparable. Dale had a fiery passionate personality and was not above speaking her mind regardless of whom or what was involved. She was compassionate, caring and concerned about the problems of the world and a fighter to the end.
She was determined to live life her way and believed in being emotionally and physically strong, resolute and steadfast. She lived her life defined by hard work and taking care of others. Dale's family was most important in her life. She remained concerned about the well-being of each family member, making them a priority. She worked in the field of customer service for many years, and was often found reading many books on natural cures for illnesses and general health maintenance. She would dispense healthful information to anyone, who would listen. She was encouraged to complete her education in dietetics and nutrition by family, and friends. She knew that it would be too hard of a sacrifice for her family opting not to pursue her interest for the well-being of her family.
Dale cared for her family physically and spiritually and these efforts took many forms. The most pronounced were cooking and gardening. She loved them with gusto, by reveling in the creation of delicious meals, so that all who took part felt happy and satisfied. Over the years, her gardens flourished with colorful flowers such as irises, lilies, daffodils, tulips, mums, snapdragons and many others.
She was a creative, artistic person whose expressions took form in drawing and doll making. The drawings were of intricate patterns that she seemed to pull from out of nowhere, and her doll making was intricate, but grounded in concrete reality. She paid close attention to every detail of her dolls by stitching them with hand techniques while using the best affordable fabric. She had to discontinue the doll-making hobby, because of her failing eyesight. Dale's life ended too short, because she was afflicted with severe diseases.l She died early Sunday morning on July 16, 2006 at home in the arms of her loving and devoted husband MacArthur, who will miss her deeply. She also leaves to cherish her memory four daughters Alexandria, Alia, Crystal and Christine; a grandson Julian; brothers Steven and Keith; sisters LaJene and Janice and many relatives and friends. Her passing has left a deep chasm in their lives.
The family of Dale Savage acknowledges with deep appreciation the many prayers, comforting messages and other expressions of kindness shown during their hour of bereavement.

Some may know us as the "Austin" Tony, Jerry, Donald, Geraldine, Audrey, Wilma (Dollar Bill - passed in 1987, Dukan aka Derrick (passed) Dave (passed), Barbara, Tim and Dwayne and of course me Stephanie Austin. My grandmother was a jewel. Precious, rare and can not be replaced. She was a great listener. She made you feel as if you where the only person in the room. The bible tells us "greater love have no man then him who lay his life down for a friend". She laid her life down for her family and friends. Every decision was for the good of the whole. She was strong and courageous.  Moreover, she was beautiful inside and out.  She had thirteen children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, friends and church family who miss her dearly.

I want to take time to reflect on my Mom this Mother’s Day. Lillian Tinnelle (Holt) passed away on December 3, 1997. She raised six children in Altgeld  – Jeannette, Pat and Paul Tinnelle, Pearl, Sherry, and Dinky Holt. We lived in Block 9. She was called Mama Lil, Miss Lil and Ma Tinnelle. She’s been gone awhile but her memory will always be with us. Thank you Mama for moving us to Altgeld in 1955 and for all of the years you gave us.

This is in rememberance of John Victor Cifax Jr.an old timer formly of Block 3,who recently left us to go home.Johnny as Icalled him from the very first time that Imet him &rest of his siblings &his parents back in Block 3 where we both grew up in.he was always a very cheerful guy when we seen each other even at the last garden's picnic, I think it was in 2004 in Carver Park.  In fact, I remember him being in the Navy we all played basketball together in the block, messing around, joking with one another, to me he was a really cool (now you know how old I am (an old timer). We had fun together growing up in Block 3. Let's pray for the Cifax family, especially mother Cifax.

Passing of some of my family memebers

Although, it has been quite a few years.  I happened to be going through the RIP link, I felt it was befitting to add my family members to the list.  My father John D Black Sr. passed away Feb. 15, 1981, and my mother passed six months later on Aug. 3, 1981.  Also my oldest sister Ophelia Black Rowlette passed on July 10, 1988.  We miss them so much, and can't believe how the years have gone by.  We moved to Block 5 in 1959 at 13241 S. Langley.  Later my mom and dad moved to block 17.

I received acknowledgement at the 2005 Altgeld picnic of the passing of William Cifax from his brother Sammy;now William & I use to hang together a lot in the day in block 3.  I used to try and keep in contact with him over the years, but lost contact since the last time we saw eachother at one of the reunion picnic's.I think it was in 98.  His siblings is or were John, Serena, Robert, Sammy, James(deceased) &, Arnold.  He had another sister but I can't remember her name at this moment. I just want to acknowledge his home going on the site so other friends of his will know.  He will be miss by me and maybe others too.

Today (4/23/05) I learned of the passing of someone who was a part of my life.  Glenn Hemphill and I played together on the 1977 Carver football team that played in Soilders Field for the city title.  Glenn was our star running back and was also our quite leader.

This news shocked me because I failed to keep in touch with him, to take time out of my schedule to meet an old friend.  I live in Snellville, Georgia now, and Glenn resided in Sandy Springs, about 45 minutes away with traffic.  Glenn sent me this return email which seemed like only yesterday, but now I see that it has actually been two months ago:

What’s up Joe?

It’s been awhile since we last communicated.  Actually, I’ve been in Georgia for almost 4 year now.  Where have you been?

I’m still living in the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody area and doing just great.  FYI - I don’t have the tape of the Bogan game – I thought I returned it to Shaw.  If you’d like to hook-up I can be reached at home at 404 847-0047, via cell at 404 915-5693 or at work at 678 320-3439.

I’m looking forward to hearing back from you.

Take care,

 Glenn

At this moment of sorrow and yet another reminder of my own immortality, I just wanted to reach out to you.  Several emails have passed between our online community which asked for ways to expedite the death notifications that we have gone accustomed to viewing.

But, for those of us who are still here, I would like to suggest that we take a moment, to enjoy, the rest of us, who too are still here.  I failed to take that moment with Glenn, and today I learned that he is gone.
