Comments: It is with regret that I announce the passing of Charles "Chuckie" Howell (16) after a short illness. Charles is the husband of Denise Jordan and father of 2 children ages 11 & 9, the son of Mattie Howell, and brother of Victor and Carol Howell. The Howell's were longtime residents of Block 16. Chuckie as he was affectionately known, was my Carver classmate and graduate of the class of 1970. His services are as follows: Viewing: Seals Funeral Home 8334 S. Marquette Ave. - Friday December 3rd from 3 to 9 pm; Wake Saturday, December 4th from 12 - 1pm - Funeral 1 - 2 pm Pilgrim Baptist Church
9100 S. Burley. God Bless his soul and our deepest sympathy to the Howell Family. ******************************************************************** Recently I learned of the death of Nathaniel Johnson a former blk 5 resident. He was the father of Nathaniel Deon Black (Mary Ann Black's son). He passed last week in Detroit MI. His mother is Ethel Johnson, and his father Ed Johnson preceeded him in passing. Also his siblings were Zenobia, Cookie, Darnell, Angie, Bernard, and Rhonda Johnson. His sister in law Leola Black asked that I pass this information along to all Altgeld Alumni. God bless his soul and our deepest sympathy to the Johnson and Black families. ********************************************************************

Judge Michael Stuttley appears all this week on CHAT a cable TV show featuring
Alumni of CHA, doing good in the hood. If you are in Chicago it is carried on the City of Chicago channel Comcast 23 all during the day. He speaks highly of our "hood" Altgeld Gardens, because there is no place else like it on this earth. Keep up the good work Judge.

Subject: my advice to Dominique
Comments: Dominique, please read Psalms 27 learn it and hold on to it especially the last verse. God knows your heart and that of your grandmothers and earth has no sorrow that heaven can't heal. Keep doing what you know to be right and God will restore your relationship for He is a healer of broken hearts. Trust in Him, wait on Him and depend on Him. God bless you for reaching out for help and that was using wisdom at your age. Some adults would have tried other options! Feel free to email me at the above address and be encouraged no matter what's going on. God Bless You! Thanks to all of you that have given her advice. It is just a reminder to all who visit our website or grew up in Altgeld that we are still a compassionate community and it still takes a village to raise a child. To God Be The Glory!

Comments: Everyone has tipped toed and soft shoed your delima. Here is a reality check for you. It appears that your Grandma is taking care of you so how dare you say that you might not be able to control yourself. You are a "CHILD" or "YOUNG adult" and you need to cherish and respect her. The best advice is for you to do what you can to help your grandma, and let her know that you appreciate what she is doing for you.

Your grandma is hurting and all you can do is pray for her and yourself. You are young and it is hard for you also, but remember the good times you had with your grandma and be there for her. She needs you and you need her. GOD knows your heart and how much you can take. Trust in the Lord with all thy heart. I send my prays and a hug for you. Take care and GOD Bless you and your family.

Subject: YOUNG SISTA NEEDING ADVICE
Comments: Dear Dominique: Wow...After I read your plea for help, I felt compelled to respond. You are only 14 years old, so first off, I need you to understand that you HAVE to respect your great-grandmother. You mentioned that her husband passed away--I'd be willing to bet that her sadness (and probable loneliness) is what is causing her to react this way. Because of her hurt, she probably just doesn't know how to properly channel it. Have you tried talking to her? Let her know A.That you love her, B. That you miss how you guys' relationship USED to be, and C. That you know what she must be going through as a result of the loss of her husband. I know what I just typed might be a 'tall order' for a 14 year-old, so if you don't feel comfortable with this, is there
an older relative you can talk to? Whatever you do, please control your anger and try tounderstand what she might be going through. Continue to do your part by taking care of your end around the house, staying in school and out of trouble, etc. I hope this helps.

Subject: new email address and Thanksgiving
Comments: Hello everybody and Praise The Lord! It's been a while. Please note the new email address. Now to answer my fellow classmate Pat. Thanksgiving is more than just turkey and the trimmings. Everyday is a day of Thanksgiving. If you wake up in the morning and still have the activity of your limbs, know who you are and have a roof over your head this is a reason to give thanks. If you have a reasonable portion of health and strength, give God thanks. If you have aches and pains give God thanks that you can feel them. Always remember as bad as you think that your situation is, there is somebody worse off than you.
My dad made 89 on Nov. 5th and he is doing great. My mom is still in the nursing home but I thank God that she is in her right mind and that she's still here. Continue to pray for her. In closing, my sister Marlene has opened a dance studio at the Children's Building on Saturday's from 10:00 a.m until 1:00 p.m. ages 2-12 i think. She is keeping her talent in AG for that is where she learned to dance with Mrs. B. Enroll your children and to Alicia Hibbler Flemings, Happy Birthday on yesterday Nov. 10th. I have never forgotten and happy birthday to Luetta Nuckolls tomorrow Nov. 12th. To Linda Evans Burks, block 1, I found our kindergarten picture. Let me know how I can get you a copy and anyone else.
God Bless you all! Minister Andrea Evans

Once again congratulations on a job well done. The
dance was a success and the place was beautiful.
There is one thing I would like to say. During the
ceremony when the speakers are speaking "Please
for Godsakes can the people at the tables be quiet."
Several times we were asked to reframe from talking
(loudly) while the speakers were addressing the
audience. We are adults with grown children, why
is this so hard to do? We as people have a lot more to
learn in areas we should be masters in. Let's keep it
real, be a lot more respectful. Love to all Pat

still make those basketball courts out of milk crates
and hang 'em on the clothes lines posts? '11 started
that. So don't anyone take our credit. We also
started 'Airball'. (Baseball played with a plastic
softball that we hit over the roofs for homeruns)

at least the last forever. Why after all this time would
someone want to come along a divid up what has been
a very good thing. My people from AG has always made
this a very special event. So for those who thought
Palmer Park had anything to do with the Gardens, you
are sadly mistaken. Get it together. People work hard
all year to make this possible and here come somebody
with another Bright idea, or at least so they thought.
Let's continue to have (Altgled Garden old Timers Pinic)
In George Washington Carver Park. From someone who's
very upset by the division that took place this pass
weekend. My personal Hat, goes off to all who made
it possible for the last 18+ years. Job Well Done!!

Comments: To all my football buddies, it was so nice to
see you...let's do it again next year...BIGGER and
STRONGER. I wondered why there were so few people in
the park on Sunday. Can someone please explain why
(or how) a portion of the "Altgeld Gardens Picnic" took
place in Palmer Park? I recall that being "ROSELAND." I
also recall that Mendel Catholic was over there. I had an
opportunity to go to school there, but I chose Carver
over Mendel. Are these individuals ashamed of the
Gardens? Is it that these individuals are reluctant to
mingle with the current residents? Or, is it some SILLY
fight that happened 10-20 years ago? One thing is clear...
WE NEED ONE PICNIC!!! Why would you split, and ultimately
destroy, something as good as the "Old-Timers Picnic."
WHAT ARE WE THINKING ABOUT !!!

Comments: Dear "Altgeld Family" I just returned from the
12th Annual Gardens Reunion Weekend. I was one of the
invited guests of honorees Dr. Lester Mae Jackson and
Dr. Wendolyn Jackson-Cooley, who received a Altgeld's
Very Own Heros (and SHEROS!) award. I know "the sisters"
because I was one of their professors during their studies
at National-Louis University. And when Dr. Mae called to
invite me, I felt honored to be asked because "the sisters"
are some wonderful people! I certainly wanted to share
this moment with them. I did not grow up at the "gardens."
In fact, I had to do some explaining to the gentleman who
opened the door for me at the Martinique Banquet Hall for
me, to convince him that I was in the right place :-)!!!! I had
NO IDEA what I would walk into. I walked into a room filled
with 350+ people and a richness of spirit and accomplishment ---
the spirit of family and love and gratefulness for God's blessings. ---
the accomplishments that are not often loudly proclaimed -
in our City or elsewhere. And here were so many honorees,
cheered on by family and friends; you all are testimony to
what a REAL community can accomplish. So, I wanted to
sign in this guestbook to express my gratitude to the "gardens
family " - a family that helped made it possible for great women
like "the sisters" to carry on that spirit, carry it into the world,
and teach all of us a lesson about love and community and pride!
See, I grew up in Berlin, Germany after the war, and I learned there
what people can accomplish when they pull together against many
odds. It was a great evening - Thank you! It was, indeed, an honor
to be present tonight. And I am glad to have met so many people
tonight who care. Our world needs more like you! Keep up the
good work.
God bless. Dr. Gabriele Strohschen DePaul University Chicago

Subject: OLD TIMERS' WKND: PROSPECTIVE NEWSPAPER FEATURE
Comments: Dear CBLL: Nitty Gritty News, a monthly, local paper here in Chgo with very widespread distribution, is interested in interviewing and taking pictures for Altgeld's big weekend. The article would run in the very next issue of the paper. The paper is a community/neighborhood-focused paper that highlights goings-on in different neighborhoods all around Chicago. My freelance column runs in this paper, and I didn't want to pass up on the chance to have Altgeld's big weekend featured and getting city-wide coverage. By the way, I did see the feature the Defender did on the weekend, but Nitty Gritty wants to elaborate on it a little bit more. I know this is last minute, but if ANYBODY sees ANYBODY from the CBLL, or someone else whom I can connect with, PLEASE contact me at 773-490-8045. Thanks!!!
